AMIIBO is a scan-able figure via the Wii U gamepad (and 3DS peripheral device launching in 2015) which will be compatible with multiple Nintendo titles, the first of which being Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. 10 figures representing different SSB characters will be available at the launch this “holiday” when SSB for Wii U is released, with more planned in the future. Amiibo figures have a computer chip inside of them allowing the player to customize their Amiibo character so they can either fight against or along side their Amiibo, or pit it against another player or their Amiibo. Further, Amiibo characters level up (up to 50 initially) which increases their attributes such as power and speed.
Further, you can customize your Amiibo’s attacks for easy access if you want to use them on another console for example. The most impressive aspect is that the Amiibo actually learns how to play against certain players. This means that if a player shields a lot for example, then the Amiibo would learn to use more grabs and throws against them. It also appears there will be more customizable features such as equipment, but more will be revealed later. It is going to be interesting to see just how useful these will be in practice. They will retail for around $14.99 a piece. Other titles the Amiibo figures will be utilized for include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Yoshi’s Wooly World and others.
